We also minister to families of those incarcerated. In a family setting, the residents create a positive, alcohol/drug free home. The residents receive support from staff and hundreds of volunteers from the community. The 104-year-old Queen Anne house is open to male and female adults, who accept the mission of Dismas and obey the house rules and guidelines. The house can accommodate up to 15 residents. We provide recently released prisoners with basic human needs of food, shelter, clothing and supportive services so they can begin their journeys toward self-sufficiency. Target group is second and third graders (7-8 year olds). Snacks, games, Bible stories, Bible verse memorization and small group discussions are integrated into a 90-minute after-school program. Organized to reach "at risk" children for Christ and to aid the local Christian community in outreach to the inner-city youth. It is an interactive social model program with a professionally supervised and specialty trained staff to care for these clients. Alzheimer’s disease is the diagnosis of the largest number of people attending. Transportation, hot noon meals, activities, entertainment, snacks and assistance with toilet and personal care are some of the services provided. We are adding a bathing component and foot care to the services available. Established in 1972, the Center provides individual, couple, family and group counseling and psychotherapy. We serve two inner city neighborhoods in South Bend, IN. Approximately 12 Saturdays in the Spring and 12 Saturdays in the Fall, we minister to children for about one hour. In that house, we pray, say the pledges to the American and Christian flags, sing praise songs, teach a memory verse, teach from God’s Word, share object lessons that help kids to understand and apply the Bible lesson to their lives, play games, have a snack and build caring relationships with children. Up to 35 persons can be accommodated with stays from several hours a week to five days a week. Transportation is available, as are scholarships for those unable to pay the full cost. AIDS Ministry/AIDS Assist201 S William St, South Bend, IN 46601 Broadway Christian Parish1412 S Carroll St, South Bend, IN 46613 Broadway Christian Parish United Methodist Church was organized to serve as a spiritual and social service resource to the people of the economically depressed southeast area of South Bend. As we work on this, we feel that the ties that grow between people in our community strengthen people and affirm them in God's good gifts. These needs are at once spiritual, emotional, economic, social and communal. Church Community Services629 S Third St, Elkhart, IN 46515 Our mission is to provide immediate assistance as well as educational self-help programs for persons and households in need, without reference to ability, age, gender, race or religious belief. We assist more than 1,000 people each month. Our primary service is our food pantry, and we also distribute personal care items such as soap, toothpaste, and toilet paper. We help with prescriptions and other needs on an individual basis. Companions on the JourneyC/O Central UMC, 1920 S Michigan St, South Bend, IN 46613 Companions on the Journey ministry helps returning prisoners by matching them with small ministry teams in local congregations. These partnerships last for approximately four months prior to release and one year after release. Through the support of these temas, we are meeting some of the practical (locating food, clothing, housing, help with employment and transportation, etc.), emotional and spiritual needs of men and women returning from prison as they rebuild their lives back home here with us. Transitional Housing for the Homeless101 E Hively Ave, Elkhart, IN 46517 The Transitional Housing Program is an extension of the Elkhart County Women's Shelter which is the only domestic violence shelter in Elkhart County. The families who enter the shelter only have a short period of 30-45 days to find other housing or they risk the possibility of returning to an abusive home. The Transitional Program is a next step for families that have left a domestic violent home and want to live an abuse free life. While they are in the two year Homeless Families Program, they learn valuable life skills such as budgeting, goal setting, parenting and home organization training. The goal of the Transitional Program is to empower its participatns to become self-sufficient without depending on government assistance (e.g. welfare system) or returning to an unsafe living environment. |
