Mission Personnel in the U.S.

Persons assigned as GBGM mission personnel within the United States serve in a variety of ways: as pastors assigned to missionary conferences or the National Plan for Hispanic Ministry; as teachers; as nurses or in other healing ministries; in social-welfare agencies, community centers, or prison ministries; in rural, urban, and ecumenical programs; in residential treatment centers; and in many other forms of ministry. Included in this category are Summer Interns, Associates in Mission (AlMs) serving in the Red Bird Missionary Conference, and Home Missionaries.

Mission Personnel Outside the U.S.

God's call to full-time mission service through the General Board of Global Ministries is being heard and responded to by candidates from around the globe. GBGM mission personnel serve in more than 60 countries around the world, committed to proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ through their ministries and lives. Included in this category are Innovative Short-Term Missionaries.

Church and Community Workers

Church and Community Workers are mission personnel of the General Board of Global Ministries devoted to uplifting the poor and disenfranchised in rural and urban areas of the U.S. and, since 1998, other countries around the world. As part of a covenant community, Church and Community Workers are assigned to cooperative parishes, ethnic ministries criminal justice ministries, rural and urban ministries, and disaster response.

Global Mission Partners (Persons in Mission)

The Global Mission Partners Program links local United Methodist congregations with Persons in Mission (PIMs) round the world: women and men named and sent by partner churches to serve in their own country or another country.

US–2s

US-2’s are young adults aged 20-30 who serve two-year terms in diverse ministres throughout the U.S. Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Designed to develop future leaders, the US-2 program provides opportunities for young adults to participate in community service and out reach ministries with faith based-agencies and communities.

Korean-American Mission Pastors

Korean-American Mission Pastors are commissioned mission personnel Board of Global Ministries and serve as developers of Korean-American congregations in each of the denomination’s five U.S. jurisdictions.

Mission Intern Program

Mission Interns - young adults aged 20-30 - are engaged in a three-year program of leadership developmental to the living out of faith. The program is divided into 15 months of work/study in an international assignment followed by 16 months of action/education in the Mission Intern's own country. Participants work with communities in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, the Pacific, and North America as grassroots organizers and/or advocates in areas of conflict resolution, peace with justice education, environmental preservation, economic development, indigenous rights, women's and children’s issues, and more.

Bishop W. T. Handy, Jr., Young Adult Missioners

Young Adult Missioners-a "new generation of mission leaders"-are young people aged 18-35 called to serve through ministries of witness, justice, and reconciliation in communities throughout the world. The first of the 800 young adults projected for the program will be commissioned during 2000-2001.

Missioners of Hope

Missioners of Hope are engaged in relief and reconciliation ministries with children throughout the continent of Africa. Initiated in 1998 in response to the United Methodist Bishops' Appeal for the Children of Africa, the Missioners of Hope program aids in restoration of the physical, social, and spiritual well being of children impacted by decades of war and conflict.

Deaconess Cutting Edge Ministries

This new initiative allows for Deaconesses to serve under the direct employment of the General Board of Global Ministries in nontraditional settings, which are unserved, or under-served by religious and secular organizations. It will enable Deaconesses to identify and address some of the most critical issues and concerns confronting the Christian community locally as well as globally.
