Berkey Memorial ScholarshipDescriptionPurposeTo promote higher education focusing on women's studies. The Berkey Memorial Scholarship was established in 2000 in memory of Karolyn Edwards Berkey, a United Methodist pastor, a member of the Conference Commission on the Status & Role of Women, a wife, and mother. Who Was Karolyn Edwards Berkey?Karolyn Edwards Berkey spent the majority of her life in Indiana. She was a graduate of Indiana University with a major in journalism. She continued her education in the divinity school at Duke University and graduated from there in 1987. Karolyn came back to be ordained in the North Indiana Conference and first served at Christ United Methodist Church in Lafayette. Later she served Mt. Gilboa, Lafayette Grace and Oxford United Methodist Churches. Karolyn enjoyed working with the youth of the churches she served. In the spring of 1996 while serving at Oxford her battle with cancer began. After a long hard fight, she died quietly in her sleep on February 19, 1999. At the time of her death, she left behind a great legacy--a two-year-old son, a husband of nine years, her mother, two brothers, two sisters and seventeen nieces and nephews. Her legacy also included many parishioners whose lives she had touched in her short stay. With this scholarship it is hoped that her passion for the United Methodist Church will continue as well as her desire to provide quality ministry for the young women of Indiana. Eligibility
