CLERGY/LAITY

Skill area 2, 3, 7 or 8 - What?

The clergy sex scandals and America's moral ambivalence now require organized religion and its clergy/lay leaders to teach and live holistic moral lives. However, the church has typically regarded sexuality and sex as a problem to be solved, rather than as a vital gift to be lived with pleasure and accountability. Therefore, our traditional definitions and moral codes are suspect. We can do better than this. In this course, we will examine the new sexual theology; the sexuality of God and creation; the difference between sexuality and sex; define and examine clergy sex scandals; boundary issues for spiritual leaders; how should we relate to sex abusers and their victim/survivors; how to find intimacy and joy in our sexuality; and how to teach and live body-mind-spirit sexuality.

REV. DR. G. LLOYD REDIGER is ordained in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and earned a doctorate in psychology and religion. He pastored in three congregations, helped lead his denomination‘s civil rights movement, served the US Air Force as Senior Trainer for Chaplains, inaugurated and led one of the first ecumenical pastoral counseling services specifically for clergy and their families for 19 years. Dr. Rediger has served as a confidential consultant to denominational leaders, lectured in seminaries, consulted with international mission groups, served on Boards of Directors for three state counsels of churches, and on editorial boards of two religious journals. Dr. Rediger has written eight books on religious issues facing pastors, one of which, Clergy Killers, has become a religious bestseller. He lives with his wife, Vera, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
