The course will present three foundational ideas/critical focal points opening the door to a clear path toward excellence in ministry. The course will also relate excellence to healthy practices of self-care in ministry. Transformation and change will be a sub-topic—how to become your own coach and make changes that stick. Such practical matters as how to deal with gossip and how to transform the pastoral call/contact will be included as aspects of excellence.

REV. DR. JOHN MATTHEWS is an ordained United Methodist Minister who has spent the past 38 years on the staff of the Midwest Ministry Development Service in Columbus, Ohio. He has served there as a counselor and coach to over 2,500 clergy. As he approaches retirement, he has developed a passion for putting together what he has learned from day-to-day interaction with persons in ministry about best practices, healthy behaviors, and excellence, and has taken the best of what he gleaned and condensed it into this workshop.
