Community Demographics

The North Indiana Conference is now using MissionInsite as its demographic information provider for local churches and districts. Its vast information is available via the internet.

Who can use this resource?

Local pastors and laity in United Methodist churches located in the North Indiana Conference. Each church can add anyone they wish as a user at no charge.

How much does it cost?

There is no charge. The resource is paid by the conference through churches’ conference tithe.

What is it exactly?

It is a web-based demographic provider. MissionInsite equips you with an interactive, map-driven, web-based resource, called The MI System. This system provides over 50 variables of current demographic information. This information is provided on the MissionInsite website.

The MI System provides you with a new way to access community information. It moves beyond static reports you order to neighborhoods you explore. If you have used MapQuest or Google Maps, you will find yourself at home in the MI System.

Is there training for this resource?

Go to the Client User Support section under the “Resources” tab at the top of the MissionInsite home page for an overview of how the resource works. Here you need to view the MI User’s Guide and Mosaic Segments Guide. The User’s Guide provides detailed instructions on how to operate the system. The Mosaic Segments Guide provides the definitions of the Mosiac life style segments found in the Demographic reports. You will need these definitions to understand the Mosaic segment categories. Both of these documents can be downloaded to your computer or printed for future use.

Ed Fenstermacher at the Conference Service Center is also available to provide on-site training at no charge. You can contact him at ed@nicumc.org or dial 800 783-5138.

How up-to-date is the information?

The information data, which is provided by Applied Graphic Solutions (AGS), is updated annually each fall.

What geographic area can I get demographic studies on?

Churches are limited to studying approximately a ten-mile radius around their church. If they wish to study a broader area, Ed Fenstermacher can provide them with such reports at no charge.

Can you plot your church members on the demographic maps?

Yes, the system can do this for a fee of $75 per year. This “Tier 2” feature can provide the ability for local churches to locate their church members and others affiliated with their church on your map. This is referred to as Congregant Plot.

The MI System

How-to: MissionInsite Reports

Log in to The MI System. You will be taken to the Demographics page where you will see your church displayed on the map. You may want to zoom in for a closer look using the “zoom in” or “track zoom” buttons on the upper left hand corner of your screen.

Enter your church’s Zip code using the “Zipcode Quick Search” tool on the right of your screen. Click “Select Zipcode.” The Zipcode you select will appear on the map in a bold blue outline. You are now ready to get a report.

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen where you will see a report selection area. Click on the “Get QuickInsite Report” button. You can rename and save your report or open it to view it on the screen. It’s as simple as that.

As you continue exploring, you may want to create custom reports using other preset geographies such as census tracts or custom geographies such as a radius or polygon. Please refer to the MI Introductory Local Church User Guide or the complete MI User Guide for more instructions. These documents can be found at www.missioninsite.com/resources.shtml. We also recommend the Local Church Getting Started Tutorial at www.missioninsite.com/client-login.shtml.

IF YOU GET LOST, you can always click on the “Help” button on the upper right hand corner of your screen.
